An Augusta aircraft parts distributor has added investors and could expand in Wichita.

Wichita oilman Dave Murfin and businessman Scott Hall, partners in Global Parts Inc., have filed for industrial zoning for the former Mid-Continent Tire and Rubber plant at 1000 E. 13th St.

The building will be renovated next spring, Hall said, with an eye toward a possible expansion of Global Parts, operated by Troy Palmer.

The 53,700-square-foot building was the home of Air Capital Mattress, a manufacturing business owned by Dean Schlabach and Bud Palmer.

Hall said Global Parts has expanded its inventory of older aircraft parts.

'It's been a good, solid business for three or four years,' said Hall, who owns Hall Industrial.

'The opportunity came up for them to purchase a significant quantity of legacy parts, so a group of investors came together that now owns part of Global Parts to assist them with that.'

Murfin, president, and chief financial officer Bob Young said the building was purchased to be home to a 'new business housing aircraft parts.'

'It's got absolutely nothing to do with the oil and gas business,' he said.

But Hall said the building's future is up in the air.

'At this point, it may have shifted a little bit because they want to stay close to their current operations in Augusta,' he said

So, what comfort came from the mattress and what came from the pillow is a little foggy for me.

What gluing does is that the lumps of the convoluted layer are flattened, so no air can possibly pass through it.

What many manufacturers do, rather sneakily in my opinion, is not to glue together the layers at the side of the mattress. The can show off this new fangled layer to potential customers and instill the illusion that air can freely pass through the convoluted layer.

But let's suppose they claim that by not gluing the sides of the mattress, air can still circulate freely enough to cool the mattress down. This is clearly a lot of nonsense. The convoluted layer is first covered by the mattress cover itself, then by sheets, then by blankets, etc

A family escaped its apartment in the 200 block of Taft Court after a mattress fire about 7:30 p.m. today.
Battle Creek Fire Chief Larry Hausman said the family was able to get out before rescuers arrived at the apartment in the River Oaks complex. The burning mattress was extinguished quickly, and firefighters then worked to rid the building of heavy smoke.

Arizona - Melea Hoenshell sobbed Tuesday in Mesa as she looked up at her apartment engulfed in flames and the black hole that was once a bedroom. More than 50 firefighters from Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert swarmed the Fiesta Park Village apartments at 839 Westwood near Alma School Road and Eighth Avenue, battling a fire that started just before 3 p.m. inside a bedroom in Hoenshell's unit and spread through the attic of the building, said Mesa fire spokeswoman Marrisa Ramirez Ramos.
Hoenshell said she had just finished eating lunch with her children when her 6-year-old boy came running into her room.

He came in and said 'Mom! Mom!, the mattress is on fire,' Hoenshell said. I said: 'Oh no! What did you do?'

Hoenshell rushed in to find the bottom bunk bed on fire. It spread so quickly and spewed so much smoke she couldn't put it out.

The little boy suffered burns on his hand, but the Hoenshells and others in the eight-unit building all escaped. Eleven people were displaced, and fire officials helped families seek aid.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 28, 2007 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Culp Inc. (NYSE:CFI) after Wednesday's closing bell reported fiscal second-quarter net earnings of $1.55 million, or 12 cents a share, up from $812,000, or 7 cents a share, during the year earlier.

The latest results include $503,000, or 4 cents a share, in after-tax restructuring and related charges. Excluding these charges, earnings were $2.1 million, or 16 cents a share.

The High Point, N.C.-based maker of upholstery and mattress fabrics posted revenue for the three months ended Oct. 28 of $64.3 million versus $59 million last year.

For the third quarter, sales in the mattress fabrics segment are expected to be up 30% to 35%, Culp said. Sales in the upholstery fabrics segment, are expected to be down about 15% to 20%, due mostly to lower sales of U.S.-produced fabrics.

Overall, the company said it expects sales for the quarter to be slightly higher than the year-ago period.

Net earnings are expected to come in between 4 cents and 8 cents a share, Culp said

Week One
There�s no denying the Italians love to please the crowd � so regardless of what the ASO does, we�ll get a taste of Team Time Trial action on day 1 in Palermo with a circuit loop around the Monte Pellegrino, much like they did in 1954 (that Giro won by Clerici).

If the traditional finish in Catania is used, cobbles will be in effect - a very young Pippo Pozzato won the Giro di Catania a few years back.

We expect 2 more stages in Sicily; one arriving in Catania in the shadow of the active volcano Mount Etna, and the other one in Messina (2 sprinter stages).

The Abruzzo is a lovely setting for the Giro, then again, can you think of an area in Italy that's not?

We suspect the RCS has learned how to transfer the race by ferry to regain the mainland, at least we hope so as no one wants a repeat of this year�s debacle from Sardinia, but come hell or high water (or both), stages 4 & 5 start at the soul of the boot with one complete stage in Calabria (homeland of the PEZ�s inlaws) on Tuesday (Appennins) and the other one to Salerno (Contursi Terme) on Wednesday.

Peschici provided the venue for a thrilling finish for the Giro a few years back - Axel Merckx went solo late only to be caught by the field and the Dolphin stormed uphill sprint.

On the Thursday the 15th , stage 6 heads west to east to the beautifull Gargano region with finish in Peschici or Vieste (Appennins again).

Our sources get a little fuzzy here, as for Friday we�ve seen talk about a loop stage in the Gargano region, Peschici - Peschici. But what�s sure is the first mountain finish to 1395meters on top of Pescocostanzo (Abruzzo) on either Saturday or Sunday.

There's a former winner on a new team this year, who is teaming up with another former winner who just happens to be from the Abruzzo...raise your hand Mr. Di Luca.

Week Two
Here�s likely where we�ll see the first transfer day � up the boot leg to the first ITT from Pesaro to Urbino � right in Ale�s backyard on the Adriatic. It�s a 30-35km ITT from the coast to 500 m altitude to ancient town of Urbino. Still some confusion on the timing: ITT on Sunday and rest day on Monday? Or rest day on Monday and ITT on Tuesday?

Pantani's old stomping grounds are lumpier than an old mattress - and his favorite roads aren't all paved either. Look for a fantastic stage here.

Our sources are sure we�ll see a stage Urbania � Cesena through the Appennines with some interesting climbs like Carpegna and Sorrivoli. The final 40 km will be the same of the stage arrived in Cesena in 2004 (Sella won) � in fact, PEZ�s Jered Gruber reported these parcours as going �from coastal flat, dull, and boring to Ardennes madness with numerous short, steep climbs whose grades often resembled a high-schooler's age.� Should be good.

The next two days from Forl� to Carpi and Modena to Cittadella are for the sprinters.

Last time the Giro visited the Alpe di Pampeago, Simoni showed all comers who the grand master bad ass was.

Family escapes mobile home fire Tuesday

Authorities believe a late morning fire Tuesday which destroyed a mobile home north of the Palestine city limits may have started due to a malfunctioning free-standing fan.Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said sheriff's deputy John Wright was dispatched to a fire at a single-wide mobile home at 8267 CR 404, approximately 10 miles north of Palestine, at 11:41 a.m. Tuesday.The mobile home was insured by its owner, according to the sheriff, who said no one was injured as a result of the blaze.'A lady and her two children - a 2-year-old son and 8-month-old daughter - were home,' Taylor said. 'She (the mother) was in the house and heard the baby say, 'Hot.' She looked around and saw some flames coming from a mattress in the east bedroom.'She drug the mattress out of the house and put it out with a garden hose,' the sheriff added.The woman went back into the house to discover 'a free-standing fan/air purifier' on fire in the same bedroom, according to Taylor. She then 'threw the fan in the bathtub,' he added.By this time, the fire had spread to other areas of the home, according to Taylor.'She tried to put some of it out,' Taylor said. 'She finally had to get her kids and dogs and get out of the house.'The Montalba, Elmwood and Bradford volunteer fire departments responded to the fire.Taylor said a representative of the American Red Cross had been contacted to provide assistance for the displaced family.'What a horrible time of the year to lose your home,' Taylor said, 'but fortunately no one was hurt.'----Paul Stone may be contacted via e-mail at pstonepalestineherald.com

A Monday morning fire that damaged four row homes in Harrisburg and displaced a man and his son started on a mattress on the second floor of one of the homes, Harrisburg Fire Chief Don Konkle said today.

'We don't know if it was careless use of smoking materials or an electrical shortage,' he added.

The home, on the 1500 block of Berryhill Street, was vacant but fire officials and neighbors believe homeless people were staying there. The home did have electricity and a space heater was found near the mattress, Konkle said.
